Women's Clothes for Mountain Biking - by Deb Bowman

  • A comfortable shirt (jersey) and sports bra, preferably made from a fabric that wicks moisture away from you and dries quickly.
  • Cycling shorts with a chamois (pronounced "shammy") to provide padding between you and the saddle.
  • Make sure the shorts are made for women, since the chamois in men's shorts has a center seam that will cause friction and irritation.
  • Remember that cycling shorts are designed to be worn without underwear to minimize irritation.
  • Socks made from a thin, wicking fabric to prevent hot spots and blisters.
  • Shoes with a sole that is stiff (for good energy transfer to the pedals) and made of rubber for good traction. Make sure laces are tucked away to prevent them from getting caught in the chainring.
  • Additional layers for cooler weather, including a jacket, arm warmers, tights or leg warmers, ear warmers, a beanie or balaclava (ski mask). Rule of thumb: If you are comfortably warm when you first start riding, you are wearing too many layers.
